Blackpool-born veteran Aaron Sharples is preparing to undertake one of the most demanding endurance challenges ever attempted, running 1,000 miles across Spain to raise money and awareness for the veterans’ charity Healthier Heroes.

Born and bred in Blackpool, Aaron will begin El Camino Español in October 2026. Supported by a small crew and a motorhome, he will cover approximately 80 kilometres each day while documenting not only the physical challenge, but also the mindset behind it and the importance of choosing courage over comfort. To Aaron’s knowledge, the route has never been completed or officially recorded in this way before, making it a potential Fastest Known Time (FKT) and possibly a world first.

The self-funded challenge has been created in support of Healthier Heroes, a charity that provides vital assistance to veterans, serving personnel and their families. The organisation helps people facing homelessness, unemployment, poor mental health, social isolation and the often difficult transition from military to civilian life.

Aaron hopes to raise £30,000 through the challenge to fund an in-house therapist for Healthier Heroes for an entire year. The funding would provide around 15 therapy sessions each week over 46 working weeks, delivering approximately 690 sessions annually and helping between 50 and 60 individuals receive specialist support.

Preparations are already well underway, with extensive training, route planning and logistical work taking place ahead of the October start. Organisers are also seeking support from businesses, sponsors and individuals who can assist with equipment, nutrition, transport, media production, logistics or financial backing to help turn the ambitious project into reality.

More than an endurance challenge, El Camino Español is about resilience, service and giving something back. Every mile run across Spain will help raise awareness of the challenges many veterans continue to face while highlighting the life-changing work carried out by Healthier Heroes. Representing his hometown of Blackpool throughout the journey, Aaron hopes his challenge will inspire others while making a lasting difference to the lives of those who have served their country.
