Installed by the Poulton-le-Fylde Historical & Civic Society, the plaque marks the site associated with one of the area’s greatest benefactors, whose charitable vision has continued to benefit local children for more than three centuries.
James Baines was a prosperous draper, landowner and philanthropist with strong connections to Poulton. When he died in 1717, his will established a charitable endowment designed to provide lasting educational opportunities for the children of the ancient parish. At a time when formal education was unavailable to many families, his bequest represented an extraordinary investment in the future of the community, ensuring that learning would be accessible regardless of wealth or social standing.
Rather than creating a single school, James Baines’s endowment established three educational foundations that continue to bear his name today. These were Baines School in Poulton-le-Fylde, Baines Endowed Church of England Primary School in Thornton-Cleveleys, and Baines Endowed Church of England Primary Academy in Marton, Blackpool. Income from the land and property he left in trust provided financial support for the schools, enabling generations of children from across the parish to receive an education that might otherwise have been beyond their reach.
The impact of Baines’s generosity extended far beyond the classroom.
