The Horseshoe Theatre is one of the most distinctive performance venues within Blackpool Pleasure Beach, occupying part of the landmark Casino Building that has overlooked the resort’s South Promenade since 1939. Throughout its history, the venue has hosted theatre productions, variety entertainment, magic shows, conferences and special events, continuing Blackpool’s long tradition as one of Britain’s leading centres of live entertainment. The theatre was created as part of the new Casino Building, an ambitious redevelopment commissioned by Leonard Thompson as he transformed Blackpool Pleasure Beach during the late 1930s. The original Casino, built in 1913 in an elaborate Oriental style, had become outdated and was demolished to make way for a bold new design by renowned architect Joseph Emberton. Construction began in 1937 and the striking Art Deco building officially opened on 26 May 1939, becoming the architectural centrepiece of the Pleasure Beach. Despite its name, the Casino was never intended for gambling. Instead, it was conceived as a sophisticated entertainment complex containing restaurants, bars, banqueting facilities, exhibition spaces and performance venues, including what is now known as The Horseshoe Theatre.

Designed in the International Modern style, the Grade II listed Casino Building represented a dramatic departure from the decorative architecture that had previously characterised the Pleasure Beach. Its sweeping curved façade, extensive glazing and iconic spiral tower reflected the optimism and innovation of the late 1930s, helping to establish a unified architectural identity across the amusement park. Today it is recognised as one of Britain’s finest surviving examples of inter-war leisure architecture. Within this modern complex, The Horseshoe was designed as a flexible entertainment venue capable of hosting a wide variety of performances and functions. Over the decades it has welcomed theatrical productions, concerts, corporate events, award ceremonies, weddings, conferences and seasonal celebrations. Its adaptable layout, incorporating an elevating stage and dance floor, has enabled the venue to evolve alongside changing entertainment trends while retaining its distinctive character.
In recent years, The Horseshoe has become known as ‘The Home of Magic’ at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Regular illusion shows and magical performances continue the resort’s long-standing association with the magical arts, complementing Blackpool’s international reputation as the home of the world’s largest annual magic convention. The venue has become an important addition to the town’s rich entertainment heritage, providing a modern stage for performers while celebrating Blackpool’s enduring connection with magic. More than eight decades after the Casino Building first opened its doors, The Horseshoe continues to welcome audiences from across the world. As part of one of Blackpool’s most architecturally significant buildings, it remains an important chapter in the history of Blackpool Pleasure Beach and a reminder of Leonard Thompson’s vision to create not simply an amusement park, but a complete entertainment destination.
